Reasons Why You Should Visit Crocodile Island in Boracay

Just off the main island of Boracay is a tiny crocodile-shaped island aptly called Crocodile Island. There are no crocodiles here, just a lot of beautiful corals and colorful marine life forms.

This is one of the most popular attractions in Boracay, mainly for its one-of-a-kind snorkeling and diving spots. This is a diving enthusiast’s paradise.

To get to Crocodile Island, simply approach one of the local boatmen or vendors who frequently walk the length of White Beach offering boat rides or island hopping trips. The trips normally begin early in the morning at 7:00 AM. Outrigger boats and paraw sailboats could take some time going around Boracay’s main island going to several neighboring islands, but getting to Crocodile Island only takes about 15 minutes. It is at the southern portion of Boracay, going to Panay.

Island hopping package that goes to Crocodile Island and includes diving gears and guides is worth PHP2500 or USD57 for about 4 to 6 hours of fun and adventure. If you wish to save a few pesos, you can rent a local boatman for a 1-hour island hopping trip for only P500 (USD11) and perhaps a snorkel and mask for 100 PHP (USD2.25).

Local vendors can also connect you with dive shops along White Beach that sell gears and offer expert diving instructors to guide you under the magnificent waters of Crocodile Island. In fact, dive shops along White Beach will most certainly offer Crocodile Island as your first dive spot.

Although Crocodile Island’s corals and a variety of fishes may be enjoyed at shallower waters, its main attractions are 40 to 80 feet under water. The water begins at 10-feet deep.

Just at the wall or the drop off point, divers are treated with several underground canyons teeming with all sorts of colorful fishes such as cardinal fish, squirrelfish, and soldier fish, among many others. The wall slowly drops from 10 feet down to 50 feet.

The flow of ocean current and Crocodile Island’s sloping wall are ideal for the survival of a wide variety of corals. The corral bed here is among the best in the world, and is often compared with that in the Sipadan Island in Borneo.

At about 45 feet down, divers get to enjoy swimming with garden ills and sea snakes, through a bed of anemones and whip corals. The underwater attraction includes a school of reef fish swimming in formation and a variety of fishes such as lion fish, scorpion fish, moray eels, cuttlefish, snappers, sea cucumbers, and certain species of nudibranch.

There have not been any sightings of dangerous marine species but the currents are often strong and dangerous. Beginners are not advised to visit the island without an expert guide. It should not be a problem, though, to seasoned snorkelers and divers.

Near Crocodile Island is the twin island of Laurel, often referred to as Laurels 1 and 2. It is famous for its swim-through tunnel and a host of colorful fishes and aquatic creatures as well. Laurel island is a must see when you visit Crocodile Island.
